The Waikato Children's Literature Association seminar The Publishing Journey features Des Hunt, Tom Moffatt and Kat Merewether.

Des Hunt says “I began writing children's adventure stories which included the things that had fascinated me all my life: science, electronic technology, NZ's unique wildlife, volcanoes, earthquakes and any other natural forces that can have disastrous consequences.” Des writes books with New Zealand settings, geology, flora and fauna for Kiwi kids, who gobble them up as do their parents, librarians and teachers. From A Friend in Paradise in 2002, he has written more than twenty Kiwi books for Kiwi kids. He received the 2017 Margaret Mahy Medal for lifetime achievement and his contribution to New Zealand children’s literature and literacy. Des will share his Margaret Mahy lecture which is aimed at adults.

Des will be joined by Tom Moffatt, winner of the Storylines 2015 Tom Fitzgibbon Award for his story Barking Mad (on this year’s Storylines Notable Book List). “Ideas for stories and books have been rattling around my head for years, and writing them down seems to be the only way to get rid of them.” In the resulting book, illustrated by Paul Beavis, Fingers at first refuses to believe that his Granddad has gone Barking Mad!

Kat Merewether is the creator of Kuwi the Kiwi which was a finalist in last year’s New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults and winner of the Te Reo Maori Children's Choice 2016. She has a passion for children's books and illustration is apparent throughout all her work. She calls herself  quintessentially Kiwi, and has been illustrating for fourteen years, working out of her award winning educational design studio, Design on Q and the boutique Illustrated Publishing. Kat also plays an ambassador role for Kiwis for Kiwis, supporting native kiwi conservation projects, New Zealand wide.

More details on the seminar (including how to register by 14 August and become a WCLA member) are on the attached seminar brochure.
