Duncan Greive

Events Room 1

Gallagher Hub, Wintec

Tuesday 9 August

1.30pm

Duncan Greive, appearing in Wintec's SPARK Week is the editor of the New Zealand website The Spinoff.

The site delivers commentary and journalism across pop culture, sports and politics.

Over the two years since its inception The Spinoff has attracted some of New Zealand’s best critics and

journalists as staff, including Steve Braunias, Toby Manhire and Alex Casey. Their work has been

complemented by contributors as diverse as CK Stead and Jemaine Clement. The site has drawn praise for

its business model and the way it counters the volume play of the major New Zealand news sites with

something more considered, cerebral and humorous.

In his presentation, Duncan will cover the challenges that journalism has experienced over the last ten years,

primarily driven by the Internet, and the way The Spinoff has attempted to build an online future – without the

clickbait. He’ll refer to his own story as a journalist, and experiences running the site, trying to balance its

commercial imperatives and creative expression.

Duncan's event is made possible by Wintec's SPARK week.
